We’ve met many guests and volunteers our time in Yetebon. Doctors from the California gave physicals to an impressive 1,200 students. Taylor University spent a month in Yetebon to teach grades 1-4 (and give the basketball team a mean scrimmage). One of my favorite parts from the recent movie “Slumdog Millionaire”
happens when the main character, a “street rat” from Bombay, India,
gives an uncertified tour of the city’s outskirts to an American
couple. Upon returning to the car he and the tourists find it has
been ransacked. A nearby policeman then figures the orphan is part of
the plot and begins beating him. Between shouts for help, the boy
remarks, “You wanted to see the real India… here it is.” Several
people in the theatre audience laughed and the woman’s response: her
face is filled with compassion, she gathers herself, and then says,
“Well, we’re going to show you some of the real America.” After
handing the boy a wad of money, she instructs the policeman to let her
go.
